Less Commonly Known Experts That You May Need in Your Injury Case
In a typical injury case, there are some experts that you would imagine and expect would be needed in your case. Think, for example, of doctors: they will testify if you’re injured, how injured you are, and what your prognosis for recovery may be.
But there is a whole world of experts in the personal injury field that are vital to winning injury cases that many people may not appreciate or possibly even heard of. Having the right expert for the right case is a vital step in winning your case.
Accident Reconstructionists – In many cases, there is a “he said/she said” debate about how an accident actually happened, who was where, how fast vehicles were going, and ultimately, who caused the accident.
All we may have after a typical accident is circumstantial evidence. This may include the resting place of the vehicles (or worse, bodies), the location and extent of damage to property (or, again, bodies), where on the ground debris is found or where skid marks are, and eyewitness recollections.
But how do you take all of that information and compile it to explain how a car accident happened? That’s exactly what an accident reconstructionist does.
Biomechanical Experts – A doctor can testify as to the nature and extent of your injuries. But a doctor can’t always legally testify as to how a given force will injure the body in a given way. That’s what a biomechanical expert does. He or she takes a given force that is placed on the body, and explains how that force impacts the body’s structures.
Coefficient of Friction Experts – Ever walk on a surface and notice how slippery it is? There’s a science for that. Coefficient of Friction experts provide testimony as to how a given surface, made of a given material, will interact with a given surface of someone’s shoe.
The expert will also testify as to how a substance on the floor (water, mud, or a spill), makes it more slippery. In other words, the expert testifies how much or how little friction exists when two surfaces interact, which directly relates to the likelihood that someone will slip on the surface.
Security experts – Security experts testify as to what kind of security measures are appropriate in given situations, and whether the security measures instituted by a given property or venue or business were appropriate for the circumstances.
Security experts are used in cases where someone is injured by criminal activity on someone’s property. But they can also be used in more specialized situations such as whether a venue had an appropriate amount of bouncers, or whether a large concert arena had security stationed in the right places to avoid an incident.
Building code experts – Often, injuries happen when buildings aren’t up to code. Imagine a staircase where the stairs or the handrails aren’t the proper height, or a roof that collapses that should not have passed inspection. Building code experts can show that a violation of building regulations leads to an accident.
